Is ALDPES one organization or two?

Phi Eta Sigma was founded in 1923 as an organization recognizing the academic achievement of freshmen men while Alpha Lambda Delta was founded in 1924 to recognize the academic achievement of freshmen women. In the early 1970’s when Congress passed Title IX universities could no longer have single sex organizations (with the exceptions of fraternities, sororities, and athletics teams). At that time both Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma had chapters at Ohio State, so we decided to join our organizations into one and admit both men and women. There are two different national organizations that are now co-ed, but the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma operates as one organization on Ohio State’s campus.

What types of activities does your organization sponsor?

ALDPES is dedicated to academic excellence, leadership, and service. The organization has general body meetings where we discuss organization business and speakers are brought to address the general membership (past speakers include: study abroad, living off campus, research, resume writing, etc.). Our service partner is the Unverferth house where our members volunteer monthly. We also participate in other university affiliated service projects like Relay for Life. Fundraisers help to support local scholarships and chapter events, and social events give our members an opportunity to meet new people and have fun!

Do I have to attend meetings or events?

There is no membership requirement that says you must attend meetings or events. You can be as active in our organization as you choose. We provide opportunities to gain leadership skills as officers or committee members, and plan fun events for general members to attend. While members can participate at their own discretion, involvement in our organization is one of the criteria we use to select recipients for local and national scholarships.

Can I join ALDPES and still join a social fraternity or sorority?

While ALDPES is a Greek letter organization, we are an honorary, not a social sorority or fraternity. You can be a member of ALDPES and also join a social fraternity or sorority.
